From the Pastor

Dear Smoke Rise Church Family and Friends,

Our church’s annual Legacy Luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, January 28, 2024. I want to personally invite you to be a part of this event. It is my desire that our entire church family celebrate together on this special day following morning worship.

Our Endowment Trustees are hosting a catered luncheon in the Fellowship Hall where we will hear a special message from Dr. Allen Walworth who will also bring our sermon in worship that day.  Allen, who served as our co-interim pastor in 2012-2013, is a dear friend to Smoke Rise and a gifted communicator.

In March 2016, the date of our church’s first Legacy Luncheon, our Smoke Rise Endowment had a principal balance of $446,765.79. As of the end of November of 2023, our funds have a value exceeding $1.8 million dollars!  We have much to celebrate. In recent years, endowment earnings have helped our church engage in new community outreach, pay for extra-budgetary facilities repair, expand our online presence, and enhance our worship experience.

With gratitude for the past and excitement about the future, we are celebrating all that God has done through our church and anticipating all that God will do. The Smoke Rise Endowment has an important part to play in our church’s bright future.

This event is open to everyone – those who have included Smoke Rise Baptist in their planned giving, those who might have interest in knowing more about planned giving as part of a Christian steward’s discipleship, or simply those who love Smoke Rise and want to see the church continue with strength and impact for generations to come. While there is no charge for the lunch, we are asking for reservations by January 15. You can return the enclosed reservation card or submit your reservation at smokerisebaptist.org/legacy-rsvp/.

Jen and I look forward to seeing you there and celebrating with you! We anticipate a large crowd and encourage you to make your reservations early.

In gratitude,

Chris George
Senior Pastor

About the Speaker

Allen Walworth previously served as co-interim pastor at Smoke Rise and was also instrumental in the Step-Up campaign of our church, and the Refresh campaign that empowered Smoke Rise to be able to fund deep repairs realizing a dramatic renewal of our campus and grounds for a sustainable future.  He brings the passion and calling of an ordained pastor, the training and discipline of a Biblical scholar, and the wisdom of a tenured church “coach” to his work with churches of all denominations.

His passion for stewardship is fueled by a pastor’s heart and a studied knowledge of scripture. Before becoming a generosity consultant, Allen was a senior pastor for 17 years, leading congregations ranging from a small-town church of 1,000 members to a large metropolitan congregation of over 9,000 members. Allen earned a Ph.D. in New Testament studies, and has taught at the college and seminary levels.
