Read: Matthew 4:18-22 – Jesus and the Disciples Make Their First Trip

Devotion: Jesus first taught about God in his hometown. There He taught people about changing the world. The people that knew him when he was little and had a hard to seeing someone, they helped raise take on such a big task. They weren’t sure that he could handle it. So, listening to God, Jesus took a trip to the beach. Have you ever been to the beach? The beach has a lot of different types of people. Jesus knew that he’d need a lot of help to change the world and going to the beach would give him the chance to reach a lot of people. Sure enough, he did. He found James and John fishing and asked them to follow him and to teach others about God. Both of them dropped their nets in the sand right where they were and followed Jesus. Next Matthew left his work and then came Simon and Andrew. Together this group all left home, traveled with Jesus and continued to gather more followers.

Like the disciples and Jesus many of us will leave our homes this summer for many different types of places. We may go to see friends and family. We may go to far off countries. We may go to the grocery store down the street. Wherever we go we have the same chance the disciples had the day Jesus asked them to follow him. Every trip we take this summer we have the chance to teach others about God’s love.

Wonder: What places you and your family might go this summer?

How might you and your family show God’s love to those around you on your trips?

Pray: Dear Lord, Thank you for calling us to go love your world today like you did the disciples so long ago. Help us this summer to find ways as family to share your love to one another and the world. Amen

Act: Make a plan as a family for the different ways you can show God’s love to others this summer.
