Scripture

Matthew 19:14

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”

Story of Belonging

I’ve been attending Smoke Rise’s Vacation Bible School for as long as I can remember. I grew up experiencing the joy of VBS, and now, as a youth member, I have the opportunity to teach and serve just as others once did for me.

This year, I, along with Jen George and Isabel Young, served as a leader for second-grade children. Throughout the week, I saw God at work in so many ways. Even though I worked with an older age group, I often sat behind a younger group, which gave me the chance to connect with Matilda Litzell after my group was dismissed.

On the last day, Matilda told me she would miss me and said that I felt like family. She even invited me to visit her anytime because, in her words, “that’s what Jesus did.” That small moment stayed with me. Even at her young age, Matilda showed the kind of love, openness, and kindness that Jesus calls us to.

Her words reminded me of when Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are most like children. I want to live with the same heart as Matilda. Jesus wants all of us to.

Pondering

When was the last time you experienced the love and acceptance of a child?

Who in your life do you think would benefit from encouragement, love, or acceptance?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank you for the example of children who show love and acceptance. May we see your work through small acts of compassion and love. Amen
