Read: Matthew 8:23-27

Devotion:

Jesus and his disciples were setting out to sea for their next adventure. Suddenly a bad storm came and caused their boat to rock violently back and forth. The disciples began to feel scared while Jesus was sound asleep. The disciples felt so much fear that they woke Jesus up from his nap! Jesus quickly woke up and told the disciples how “little faith” they had while swiftly calming the storm. The disciples were relieved but began to wonder about the power Jesus held.

Being caught in a thunderstorm at home is one. thing. Being in a car or on a boat while on a trip, can be even more frightening. We don’t know where we are or what the road ahead looks like. We can feel panicked or scared, just like the disciples. We can often forget that God is with us in our storms no matter how sudden they happen. The disciples had a natural feeling of fear being on this boat but they forgot they had Jesus with them the entire time. If Jesus was cool and collected, the disciples should have been too. Our faith in the Lord can help us feel more at peace in the middle of a storm. Our faith can ease our feelings of panic or fear.

Wonder: How do you feel about thunderstorms? How do you feel God’s presence in a storm? What do you do in moments of “little faith?”

Pray: Dear Lord, thank you for being with us through any storm. Help us to strengthen our faith and love for you even when we are afraid. Amen.

Act: There are many things that can cause us to be fearful. When you find yourself in a moment like that this summer, stop and write a note to God. After you have written your letter, pray over it and ask God to help you overcome your fears and trust God.
